Our beliefs.
They guide every decision that we make at OKS Martial Arts and Fitness in Forsyth. And outside of the dojo.
Our TEAM got together and came up with several. They are what we look to do/have/be as Instructors.. and as an individual person when we are not in our uniform :o)
We have 8 PILLARS:
OKS Martial Arts and Fitness CORE Values:
- Optimism – Always find the bright side
- Perseverance – Find answers, not excuses
- Empower – Make individuals better versions of themselves
- Be Exceptional – Do everything better than great
- Have Fun – Gets Results
- Set an Example – Everywhere
- Do Extra – Look to help
- Seek Perpetual Growth – For OKS and personally
They set our path and keep us focused on doing the right thing. Do YOU have a set of CORE values? We teach them at our school to get kids AND adults thinking about making a list – and it helps focusing on them to be extra awesome!
All you have to do to make your family’s own is to think of maybe 3 to 5 very important traits to always have, tactics to achieve the goals you want and maybe take some ideas from companies that set a good example/you wouldn’t mind “being like.”
The first one is OPTIMISM. Personally, I am a huge optimist. Doesn’t matter what goes “wrong,” I will find a way to get past it and it will only get better. When we look at a student, we try to complement them on something they are doing RIGHT, rather than just corect, correct, correct. One sneaky tip I can give the Forsyth parents reading this Martial Arts blog is to praise the kid NEXT TO YOUR KID (brother, sister, classmate, friend, etc). When they see us in class telling Jane what an excellent low stance she has, it is certain that Johnny next to her is gonna go lower lol!
I’m optimistic I’ll see you in a class so we can start making your life EVEN BETTER soon! :O)
Next is Perseverance. We actually start implementing this as part of their belt tests in the Intermediate ranks at our school. They have to go above and beyond what they think they are capable of. For example, jumping rope. What is the longest you have jump roped? Anyone you know? Our record is 3.75 HOURS! In a row. No more than 5 sec break to fix rope. By a 13yr old! Of course the rope hit feet, etc, but they just kept on jumping the whole time! That is SUPER COOL and teaches them that little things add up and about the 60% rule (look it up :o). Each kid does their own perseverance against themselves. They don’t have to beat the record, just do the best they possibly can.
Check out our trials if you’d like you or your child to have more perseverance!
Next blog will be on Empowering and Being Exceptional!
